Vietnamis a nationofearlyrisers - and I'm talkingroughly 5am throughout the week, and I wassurprised to discoverthatthistrendcontinues in the northwhereitismuchcoolerandlesshumid than the south. As a result, Ben and I havebeensettingalarmsforbetween 6 and 7.30am every day foratleast the lastweek. Therefore, wetook the opportunity to have a lie in in Hanoi, and a lazy day mainlyinvolving, breakfast, lunch, a relaxed strollaround the prettylake in the OldQuarter, dinnerandbeers. Fantastic! In the eveningweventured to the 'famous' waterpuppets.... Girls - youdidnotmissmuch!
In linewithourrecentexcursions, wedecided to rent (yetanother) motorbike to explore the areaaroundHanoi, in particular the smallhandicraftvillages in the nearbycountryside. Wevisited a ceramicsvillage (Ba Trang), a silkvillage (Van Phuc) and a SNAKEvillage (Le Mat) - butcoweredwhenofferedlivesnakeforlunch. (Gross) highlightof the day washappeningupon a localvillage's lunchtimecock-fightingsession, whereabout 100 men weregatheredaround the smallringwatching the cocksfight. As the onlygirlthere, I moonlightedas the mainattractionfor the first 5 minutesafterourarrival, but then thingscarriedonasnormal, wagerswereplacedand the localkidsjostled to get in mycamerashot. An interesting, ifdistasteful, stoponourjourney...
Unfortunately, ourlast day in Hanoididnot go asplanned, largelybecause Ho Chi Minh doesnotreceivevisitorson a Fridayandwehadnotspottedthis in ourguidebook... Wetouredhishouseonstilts (notthatimpressive, for the record - butapparentlythisshowshow he was a 'man of the people') and then headedforlunch, a massageandsome Bia Hoi. In the end, not a badway to spendourlast day in Vietnam!
In other news, wehavehadourTibetanpermitsissuedandtheyare(hopefully) wingingtheirway to Chengduas I type - we will hopefully be meetingthem theresometimebeforeMondayand then heading to Tibeton Tuesday for 10 days. I'll be back to bloggingbyemailwhile in China, so apologies in advance forthe poor formatting!
